Coronavirus reportedly kills two former players
A pair of former Division I college basketball players from the early 1990s reportedly died after battling the coronavirus.
The death of David Edwards, 48, who still holds Texas A&M’s single-season assist record, was announced on Facebook by one of his former teammates, Charles Henderson, who said in his Monday posting, “This coronavirus has hit me in the heart. We need to find a vaccine.”
Lee Green, a backup guard for St. John’s from 1991-94, also succumbed to the virus, ex-teammate Lamont Middleton told the New York Post. The 49-year-old Green averaged 2.9 points at St. John’s while being part of two NCAA tournament teams. He was a retired Brooklyn police officer who was also a DJ, according to the Post.
“It’s just a terrible thing that happened to him,” said Brian Mahoney, Green’s former St. John’s coach.
Edwards was a freshman backup point guard at Georgetown alongside future NBA star teammates Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo
while averaging 5.4 points and 4.8 assists during the 1989-90 season. He scored a team-high 19 points in a 74-71 second-round NCAA tournament loss to Xavier and Tyrone Hill, a lottery pick by the Warriors three months later.
It would be Edwards’ final game at Georgetown. After
his ongoing battles and disagreements with coach John Thompson, Edwards transferred to Texas A&M after one year with the Hoyas.
Edwards enjoyed success with the Aggies, averaging 13.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 7.1 assists during his three-year stay at Texas A&M.
