Churches celebrate Easter online
Editor’s note: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, area churches have made adjustments to their regular services. Most are offering online services. Here are some of the local church responses:
ARCATA FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Arcata (1700 Union St.):
Sunday morning services and activities, as well as all Bible study groups, are being suspended until further notice due to COVID-19. However, Pastor Dennis McGuire is posting a current sermon each week at www.arcatafbc.org. Call 707-822-0367 with prayer requests.
FIRST COVENANT CHURCH Eureka (2526 J St.):
Interim Pastor Ali Hasan will be worshiping online with the word of God this Easter Sunday: “The Real Cure: Christ!” Jeremiah 8:22; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. FAITH CENTER
Eureka (1032 Bay St.):
Easter services are available online this weekend. Pastors Matt and Heidi Messner will be preaching a message out of John 11 titled “I am Your Victory.” Services will air on the Faith Center website and Facebook page at 6 p.m. tonight and Sunday at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Faith Center’s building is currently closed for walk-in appointments during the week, though the staff is ready to respond to requests and questions during this crisis. Assistance is available and appointments are still being scheduled. If you wish to contact Faith Center’s staff and pastors during the closure, use the website contact form or call 707-442-1784 during regular office hours. During the gathering restrictions, services will be livestreamed at eurekafaithcenter.org, on Facebook Live and through the church app. Faith Center is also on Instagram @eurekafaithcenter. St.): Worship on Easter Sunday will be a livestream beginning at 9:30 a.m. on the church’s Facebook page. Pastor Kathryn Dunning’s message is titled “Christ is Risen Indeed!” A Holy Communion liturgy will be shared. Bayside (24 Fellowship Way): “Rolling Back the Stone” will be the topic examined by the Rev. Anthony Mtuaswa Johnson in a Zoom service at 11 a.m. Sunday. This sermon will focus on what lessons one may glean for oneself while recognizing the most important and oldest festival of the Christian church. What does this ancient celebration have to offer in this time of tumult? Perhaps this is the time for “Rolling Back the Stone.” A recording of the service will be available for viewing at the fellowship website, huuf.org.
