Bad look for newspaper to publish such an insert

-

I agree with the letter written by Jada Brotman ( “Insert published over the weekend very upsetting,” Times-Standard, April 14, Page A4) regarding the religious promotional insert published in your paper this last weekend. I honestly did not even read it, but saw that it was explicitly religious content, and while I admired the colorful pictures, I did not see anywhere any notice that it was paid for, nor any notice that it did not reflect the opinions or positions of the newspaper. I thought it a bit strange that a local newspaper would publish something reflecting a specific religious belief or position without any kind of disclaimer or notice. After reading Brotman’s letter, I retrieved and read the text of the insert, and was equally upset by the anti-Semitic assumptions and accusations. Accusing the Jews of killing Jesus is one of the oldest “fake news” claims of all time and has been used to rationalize and justify horrendous acts and persecution. Putting pretty pictures, colors, and flowers over hatred doesn’t make it palatable or acceptable, regardless of what your religious beliefs are. Even if someone were paying for these inserts (which was not made clear) there should be a review process, that gives the newspaper the right to refuse to publish material that’s discriminatory, racist, inflammatory, harmful, and wrong — and to clearly label “paid content” and “paid advertising” as such. If there are such policies, they weren’t followed in this case. Sadly, a bad presentation for a day when Christians celebrate the power of love over hate and life over death. Ruth Moon, Eureka
