Who’s volunteering to die so we can open the country back up?

- Matthew Owen Matthew Owen resides in Eureka, and believes the First Amendment allows for free speech, even when married to a Humboldt County supervisor.

There are credentialed coronavirus professionals we should be listening to in the media such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, National Institute of Health; Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Emory University; Dr. Robert Redfield, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Dr. Deborah Birx, State Department. These experts talk about medicine and science, not politics.

Then there’s Fox News. This past Thursday on the “The Ingraham Angle,” Dr. Phil (McGraw) suggested it was dangerous to shut down the economy in order to stop the COVID-19 pandemic. A day earlier, Dr. (Mehmet) Oz said, “The opening of schools may only cost us 2-3% in terms of total mortality. It might be a trade-off that some folks consider.” By a show of hands, how many parents are willing to bring your children back to school next week, and randomly pull kids as a sacrifice for opening up our schools again? That’s what I thought.

Right-wing talk radio keeps promoting opening up our economy with herd immunity, which is when a large enough part of the population is immune to a specific disease. If enough people are resistant to the virus, it has nowhere to go and burns out. Great idea if we have mass testing and a vaccine. We have neither. Contrary to when President Trump said that a vaccine is coming “soon”, in reality a vaccine is 12-18 month away.

Even then we have to produce 330 million vaccines and ship them throughout the USA. Hold up your hand if you’re willing to give your life just so we can open our country back up again.

Just the other day President Trump was spinning “Opening Up America Again,” where the president wants states to open up gyms, restaurants, movie theaters and sports venues, but with strict social distancing measures. Think about that. The average restaurant, sporting event or movie theater will have to remove at least 50% of their seating to have proper social distancing. Run that by a local restaurant owner. If they were barely making a profit with 100% seating capacity, what’s the profit projections with more than 50% of their seating removed?

Everyone has the right to freedom of religion and to peacefully assemble. I just wouldn’t recommend packed churches right now. Pray with your church through social media or a parking lot church service with your family remaining in your car. If you’re gonna be one of the yahoos at these capital rallies screaming to “open up our country now!”, I’d recommend you wear a mask and not stand should-to-shoulder with the stranger next to you draped in the American flag and holding his gun. Please understand that when you yell at the top of your voice, your spittle is flying everywhere and on everyone. Your “Free America” rally is now a breeding ground for the coronavirus and you probably won’t be around this November to vote.

At the end of the day, I don’t really care what some politician or talking head says. I’m gonna follow the recommended medical guidelines as I want to be around in seven months to vote. This November, it’s “vote blue, no matter who!” Berniecrats, I know most of you aren’t Democrats. You’re independents, communists and socialists. You do realize that Bernie Sanders dropped out of the presidential race? Then why do you still have your “Bernie” bumper stickers and signs on your front lawns? Please replace those “Bernie” signs with a “Biden” sign. You can start Bernie’s next 2024 presidential run on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
