Eel River Soroptimis­ts honor local teens

Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal of Eel River Valley has recognized “Girls of the Month” Emmaly Purvis and Halee Nickols for their achievemen­ts in vocational arts and Brenda Bonilla for her achievemen­ts in school spirit activities.

Purvis, daughter of Chris and Sarah Purvis, is a senior at Fortuna Union High School and presently serving as senior class president. She is involved with FFA having not only earned her California State FFA degree but also currently serving as chapter president and previously serving as the chapter secretary and sentinel. In addition, Purvis has also been involved with homecoming lip sync and powder puff football and participat­ed in the Fortuna High Stand Together Week event. After graduation, she plans on attending Chico State University to major in agricultur­e education.

Nickols, a senior at Ferndale High School, is the daughter of Michael and Debra Nickols. She is a member of several organizati­ons, including the Dusty Bottoms Horse Associatio­n, Ferndale FFA, Ferndale 4-H and the Redwood Acres Junior Fair Board. She is also a member of the dairy cattle judging team and is the Humboldt County 4-H ambassador. She is a fouryear member of the California Scholarshi­p Federation and achieved High Honor Roll status. In 2019, Nickols was selected as the District 1 Dairy Princess. She also played varsity and junior varsity basketball. She plans to attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo to major in dairy science and minor in agricultur­e business. She plans to explore careers within the dairy industry that have a business aspect.

Bonilla, a senior at East High School in Fortuna, is the daughter of Armando and Asuncion Bonilla. She is active in school spirit activities and is involved with the Girls Group at East High. Her future plans are to become a pediatrici­an.
