‘Café Zoetrope’ takes top honors in RAA online exhibit

-

Winners have been announced for the Redwood Art Association’s “Virtual Art Exhibition.”

The $200 first-place award went to Jamie Pavlich-Walker for her mixed media work titled “Café Zoetrope.” Café Zoetrope — an Italian bar and restaurant owned by Francis Ford Coppola — is located in San Francisco.

“Urban landscape is one of my favorite subjects,” said Pavlich-Walker, “and we are fortunate to live close to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Cafe Zoetrope occupies the ground floor of San Francisco’s historic Sentinel Building (Columbus Tower).”

“Part of my process is to research the subject,” Pavlich-Walker said, “then share that knowledge by using papers with words, phrases and photos to assist in telling the story.”

The second-place award was given to Kjerstine Jennings for “Distant Goals,” an alcohol ink and digital photo work. Jennings received $150.

Katalina Prince’s “Introflection,” a three-dimensional work of basalt, fir and copper, received the $100 third-place award.

Other cash awards were received by Erica Brooks, Ann Cline, Doug Freie, Ben Funke, Karla Kaizoji Austin, James Marks, Reuben Mayes, Mykaela Montgomery and Steven Taylor. Honorable mentions went to Bill

Basham, David Boston, Jon Exley, Maggie Fratkin and Diana Minton.

The judge for this exhibition was Dean Smith, associate art faculty at College of the Redwoods.

“With such an amazing turnout and variety of strong artwork, it was difficult to narrow my choices down to clear award winners” said Smith. “I appreciated all the work I was looking at, but ultimately I made a lot of my final decisions based on personal tastes in visual style or subject matter.”
