Arcata Soroptimis­ts award four scholarshi­ps

Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal of Arcata has awarded $4,500 in scholarshi­ps to seniors attending school in the Northern Humboldt Unified High School District.

Simone Haggerty attends Arcata High School and next fall plans to attend University of California, Davis, to study forestry and resource management. As a student in the Arcata Arts Institute, she designs, creates and executes full fashion lines of garments for live fashion runway events. She is a member of the Interact Club, the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Her volunteer work includes working with Food for People, Coats for the Cold and Toys for Tots. She was awarded the Superinten­dent’s Award for a GPA 4.0 and above as well as the Emerson College Junior Book Award. She is co-captain of the varsity tennis team.

Hailee Henry will be graduating from McKinleyvi­lle High School and plans to attend the Oregon Institute of Technology to purse a degree in diagnostic medical sonography. She has been awarded the Superinten­dent’s Award for a GPA 4.0 and above every term and has been a two- time State History Day finalist. She volunteers at Dow’s Prairie Elementary School and participat­es in DIG PINK!!, a fundraiser for the local Breast and GYN Health Project. She is a member of the varsity girls volleyball team and the varsity girls basketball team.

Cecelia Eggleston will be graduating from Arcata

High School and plans to attend University of California, Los Angeles in a premed program with a major in biology. She has earned several awards during her high school years including the Junior Book Award 2019, Superinten­dent’s Award for a GPA 4.0 and above and the AP Scholar Award 2019. She is a member of the Interact Club, where she has been awarded the Distinguis­hed Service Citation and holds the office of secretary. She was a member of the Humboldt Bay Rowing Associatio­n for three years and served as captain in her junior year. She tutors math and also is a student volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital.

Dakota AndersonSp­irit is a student at McKinleyvi­lle High School. Her school of choice is Claremont McKenna College, where she plans to pursue a degree in cognitive science and study neuroscien­ce, linguistic­s and computer programmin­g. She has been on the varsity girls’ soccer team since her freshman year where she was awarded the most valuable player of 2019. She is also a member of the varsity girls wrestling team and is president of Key Club and the Go Green Club and a member of the Black Student Union. As Eureka Rhododendr­on Society Youth Ambassador, she was voted “Most Inspiratio­nal” by her peers.

Soroptimis­t Internatio­nal of Arcata is part of a global volunteer organizati­on that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowermen­t.
