Eel River Soroptimists name ‘Girls of the Month’
Soroptimist International of Eel River Valley has recognized Alexis Roberts, Kiara Weatherford and Alexandra Puga as its most recent “Girls of the Month” for citizenship.
Roberts, daughter of Chuck Roberts, is a senior at Fortuna Union High School. She has been involved with several programs, including the Fortuna Creeks Club, helping to clean up the environment; Link Crew, helping new students adjust to high school; and the Toddy Thomas Excel program, helping students with their homework. She was also the class secretary during her sophomore and junior years and is currently is the Associated Student Body secretary.
Roberts has been on the volleyball, basketball and track and field teams at Fortuna High and also ran cross country. She has participated in the Health-Careers Exploration Summer Institute program, where she obtained experience in a hospital setting. She has a GPA of 4.16 and received academic awards in English 2 and Spanish 2.
After graduation, Roberts plans to attend Sacramento State University, with a goal of becoming a registered nurse.
Weatherford, a senior at East High, is the stepdaughter of Shannon Weatherford. Weatherford has worked with Two Feathers, a Native American family and services assisted organization, in passing a bill dealing with youth suicide in California. She was a speaker at the Bear River mental health conference and is currently working to organize another conference.
In her junior year, Weatherford participated in track and field activities. She plans to attend College of the Redwoods in the fall and pursue a career in the mental health field.
Puga, a senior at Ferndale High School, is the daughter of Shelly Rodgers and Robert Puga. She raises and sells steers and, for the last four years, has shown them with the Ferndale FFA. She was the runner-up Humboldt County Beef Ambassador and, this year, is the chair for the Beef Ambassadors.
In high school, Puga played varsity volleyball for three years and has been on the high honor roll for the past two years. She has been involved with high school rodeo for seven years, was the high school champion barrel racer and, when competing at state level for barrel racing, she placed 11th in California.
Puga plans to attend College of the Redwoods and continue involvement with volleyball and rodeo, with an ultimate goal of becoming a history teacher.
