Bunker Boy transforms capital into a war zone

- Matthew Owen Matthew Owen resides in Eureka, and believes the First Amendment allows for free speech, even when married to a Humboldt County supervisor.

Back in February, the Trump campaign believed they had a lock on an Electoral College victory in November. Eight Democrats were still on the Presidential debate stage, yelling at each other like school children. None of them had any serious campaign funds, outside of the two billionaires (Bloomberg and Steyer) who spent an estimated $500 million of their own ego money. Trump pointed to the booming stock market, low unemployment, low interest rates and took credit for everything.

Flash forward to where I believe we hit a tipping point, the moment we’ll look back on five months from now and say, “Remember that first week in June? That’s when it changed.” When “Bunker Boy” finally emerged from hiding this week, he grabbed his weapon of choice and started firing away … with tweets. “I’ve done more for Black Americans, in fact, than any President in U.S. history”. Sorry to make you spit your coffee. Trump first denied going to the White House basement bunker to hide from the protesters, then changed his story and told Brian Kilmeade on Fox and Friends With Benefits, that he wasn’t hiding, in fact he was “inspecting” the bunker.

“It’s almost like the United States has no President — we are a rudderless ship heading for a major disaster. Good luck everyone!” Trump’s clairvoyant tweet from March 20, 2014. Reeling from COVID-45 and then the public execution of George Floyd, we needed leadership to heal the pain and restore calm to our country. While first lady Melania Trump tweeted, “As a nation, let’s focus on peace, prayers & healing,” President Trump was doing his usual inciting division amongst America.

I find it ironic that Trump used five medical draft deferments to dodge military service during the Vietnam era. This past week our Coward in Chief transformed Washington, D.C., into a war zone by directing the U.S. military police to attack unarmed civilian protesters and the media using chemical tear gas, flash-bang grenades, rubber bullets and riot shields. All so he could use a local church and the holy Bible as a political photo op. I’ll bet Trump doesn’t even know the second chapter in the Bible (it ain’t Mark). While Trump calls himself the “law and order president”, what did your eyes see on TV this past week? In a conference call with the U.S. governors, Trump said, “These people are terrorists. You have to arrest them. If you don’t dominate, you’re wasting your time. They’re going to run over you. You’re going to look like a bunch of jerks. You’ve got to arrest people, you have to track people, you have to put them in jail for 10 years and you’ll never see this stuff again.” Wow … put civil protesters in jail for 10 years. Not sure that’s what the framers of our Constitution had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

In a harbinger of things to come, Congressman Steve King, (Iowa 4th), the nineterm conservative Republican, just lost his primary this week. How crazy was Congressman King? Let’s look at some of his greatest hits: “If not for rape and incest, would there be any population left?” And who could forget his comment on Dreamers, “For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.” Good riddance, Congressman King. Back to raging on Faux News.

Some of the best political ads are now coming from The Lincoln Project, a group of hardcore conservative Republicans who are RVAT (Republican Voters Against Trump). They’re angry that the Republican Party is dead, destroyed from within by a parasite called “Trump.” Family values? Trump’s had how many affairs, paid for a porn star with campaign funds and then lied about it? Free trade versus the president who wants tariffs, tariffs and more tariffs? Balanced budgets versus the largest deficit in history? And that was before the coronavirus crisis. Russia’s our main adversary versus the love-fest Trump has with Putin and any other dictator. The Party of Lincoln who freed the slaves versus the Party of Trump.

Come this November we all have a choice to make: Do we continue to believe in alternative facts and fact-free propaganda? Do we believe in the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law? Do we vote for the Cult of Trump or to Make America Normal Again? Your choice.

“It’s almost like the United States has no President — we are a rudderless ship heading for a major disaster. Good luck everyone!” — Donald J. Trump, 2014
