Chico man suspected of homicides gets new lawyer
A Chico man suspected of a double homicide in Southern Humboldt was appointed a new lawyer and entered a time waiver for trial.
Andrea Sullivan was appointed as the attorney for Ulisses Rodriguez, who was charged with fatally shooting Tiffany Ellebrecht, 31, Jeremy Kuemmel, 32, at a China Creek grow site before putting their bodies inside an SUV that was set on fire on Aug. 14, 2018.
“Due to the extreme serious nature of this case and in trying to catch up from almost two years in, I’m requesting that any trial dates be vacated and that we put this on for setting on the 16th of next month,” Sullivan said.
Judge Lawrence Killoran pointed out that Rodriguez had not entered a time waiver, al
lowing for the trial to take place after the 60day time frame within which a trial is supposed to occur after a defendant pleads guilty or not guilty to the information presented at the preliminary hearing.
Rodriguez chose to enter the time waiver to give his attorney time to catch up with the case.
“If that’s what you need, that’d be OK with me,” Rodriguez said.
Trial-setting for the case is set for July 16 at 8:30 a.m.
Rodriguez is being held at the Humboldt County jail on $4 million bond.
Hoopa man accused of killing sister set to go to trial in July
A Hoopa man accused of killing his sister at a gas station two years ago is headed to trial in July.
Antone Aubrey, 32, who is accused of shooting and killing Angel Aubrey, 33, behind the Hoopa gas station on Feb. 17, 2018, is tentatively set to go to trial July 16. Both defense attorney Russell Clanton and Candace Meyers said they needed a second confirmation date, which was set as June 30, to ensure logistical issues had been sorted out.
Clanton said he needed to contact the doctors and other witnesses in the case about the prospective trial date and commit to that with them.
“I’ve told Ms. Meyers that I will do that today if the court is going to, the Council’s ready, and we’re not resolving the case apparently that I will contact these doctors,” Clanton said, “but as of today I would indicate that we are prepared to go forward.”
Meyers said she was in a similar position and would like a second confirmation date “given some of the logistical uncertainties.”
Aubrey is being held at the Humboldt County jail and is ineligible for bail.
