The Mateel offers special summer meals

Special summer meals raise funds for Mateel Community Center

- By Heather Shelton hshelton@times-standard.com

The Mateel Community Center in Redway is presenting “Summer DriveThrough Dinners” starting Friday. The dinners — all packaged to go — feature natural and/or organic ingredients created by local chefs. Desserts and beverages are also available.

The first meal is set for this Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and features chef Annika Hogan’s summer-inspired dinner. Meal choices include:

· Asian Lemongrass Ginger Pork served with Rainbow Peanut Slaw and coconut rice — $18

· Cilantro Lime Shrimp Kabob served with Rainbow Peanut Slaw and coconut rice — $18

· Red Curry Tofu and Veggie served with Rainbow Peanut Slaw and coconut rice — $18

· A la carte pineapple or shrimp kabobs — $8 each.

Funds raised will go to help the Mateel Community Center during these challenging times.

“The Mateel Community Center has been a place for the community to gather for decades,” said the center’s publicist, Justine Ketola. “One of our board members, Nicole Devine, had the idea to do a drivethrough dinner pick up to help raise funds for the MCC. This will help the Mateel keep its doors open and the center available to the community.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously stripped us of our ability to raise money,”

Ketola added. “We are a venue for gatherings and, since it is state mandated that we cannot have large gatherings, it has put us into a financial bind. Normally, we would have held our annual Summer Arts and Music Festival in June, but due to circumstances, we were not able to do so. Summer Arts and Music Festival is one of our primary sources of income and, without having it, we are struggling.”

Full menus will be posted on the Mateel website, mateel.org.

“We would love to ask the community if someone is interested in being a guest chef to please email the Mateel board at board@mateel. org,” Ketola said. “It would be wonderful to have guest chefs from years past cooking in the kitchen. Currently, we are hoping to have a drive-through summer dinner bimonthly, but it’s a wait and see, (depending on) how we do on the first one.”

Dinner orders can be placed by calling the Mateel office at 707-923-3368. To pick up food, drive into the Mateel’s lower parking lot at 59 Rusk Lane and then exit out the back gate. Limited seating will also be available on the hillside.
