The trial for a Hoopa man accused of killing his sister is set to take place in early July.

Antone Aubrey, 32, is being charged with the murder of his sister Angel Aubrey, 33, at a Hoopa gas station on

Feb. 17, 2018, and is expected to have a six-to-eight-week trial starting 9:15 a.m. July 10 barring jury trials being further delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The people are confirming at this point if the courts are available,” said Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees. “My understanding is July 13 is the date for having jurors in so we’d be asking to confirm.”

Defense attorney Sarah Zalkin said she was also ready to confirm assuming “jurors will be available.”

Judge Timothy Canning said he wasn’t sure how many jurors would be available or just what the trial schedule would look like. Rees said six to eight weeks seemed reasonable with half of that expected to be taken up by jury selection.

“I have no idea how jury selection is going to look,” Rees said. “I’m going to estimate in a homicide case, I don’t think a three-to-fourweek estimate would be unreasonable for jury selection just given the limitations.”
