Insurance companies must go

- By Pat Kanzler Pat Kanzler, RN, resides in Eureka.

Now I am really flummoxed: Biden is introducing a bill to provide the country with inexpensive internet because the pandemic has shown such a “stark divide” in those that have it or have not; but he does not see the “stark divide” of those that either don’t have health care or cannot afford good health care?

I need to make my point here: there are a majority of people who, when polled, want universal health care, but when asked if they will give up their present health insurance, they retract that position. Our very numbers will force Congress to move on this, but we must understand that single payer is MUCH BETTER than the health care insurance you have now; THERE ARE NO NETWORKS: no one can say to you, “We cannot give you that treatment or medication or doctor because your plan does not cover that.” Single payer, whether it be AB 1400 just introduced to the California Legislature or Medicare for All, HAS NO NETWORKS.

A PUBLIC OPTION IS NOT SINGLE PAYER. It is another insurance; you know the subsidies people get now with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)? YOU PAY FOR THOSE. Or do you think the health insurance companies, out of the goodness of their hearts, give people free health care? If you think that, what planet are you from? The insurance companies must go.

Single payer would be paid for by progressive taxes, and believe me, you would not pay as much as you pay now in copays, premiums and deductibles. How do I know, not being an economist or someone with a big mouth playing like know it all? Easy: with single payer, you are not contributing to the obscene salaries of the CEOs, who make MILLIONS. TALK ABOUT SAVING MONEY.

So, Joe Biden: the people are telling you there is a STARK DIVIDE in our health care … DUH! You tell him!
