McKinleyville High grad pens book

On Nov. 23, 1221, a boy was born in Toledo, Spain. Alfonso X has become known as one of history’s wisest rulers because of his enthusiastic acceptance of the cultural and scientific currents of his age. He attracted the best scholars from all over the known world to his court, whether they were Christian, Jewish or Muslim, and together they saved Classical learning and produced knowledge that influenced poets, historians and scientists for hundreds of years.

McKinleyville High School graduate J. K. “Jessica” Knauss believes that this open-minded embracing of different cultures for the betterment of humanity should be celebrated now more than ever. As an author of historical fiction, she knew that the best way to honor the king would be by writing a book that showcases his greatest work.

In more than 400 songs in the “Cantigas de Santa María,” Alfonso X constructed an ideal kingdom full of learned, talented and prosperous subjects. In the short story collection “Our Lady’s Troubadour,” Knauss offers historical fiction lovers imaginative retellings of these tales to paint a vivid picture of life in the Middle Ages.

In addition to the stories, “Our Lady’s Troubadour” also features illuminated plates from the original manuscripts of the “Cantigas de Santa María” as well as historical notes by the author, who has a doctorate in medieval Spanish literature. “Our Lady’s Troubadour” will make its debut from Encircle Publications in hardcover, paperback and ebook on Nov. 17. The Spanish-language edition, titled “Trovador de Santa María,” will come out on the same day.

Knauss grew up in McKinleyville and is living her dream of residing in Zamora, Spain.
