Christmas sale

A “Christmas Bazaar” will wrap up Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1951 McKinleyvi­lle Ave. in McKinleyvi­lle. New items and bargain items will be available.

History talk

The Humboldt County Historical Society’s library lecture series will take place Saturday at 2:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The topic will be “Lighthouse­s of Humboldt County” with Bureau of Land Management Park Ranger Julie Clark. The talk is based on her new book, “Lighthouse­s of Humboldt County,” printed by Arcadia Publishing. Clark is the unofficial historian for the Arcata Field Office and works primarily as the Headwaters Forest Reserve park ranger.

Music event

The Red Hot Shame band will play original tunes Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. during Arts Alive! at Old Town Coffee and Chocolates, 211 F St. in Eureka. The new trio Chadfish will open the show.

Art exhibit

The Redwood Art Associatio­n will a reception for Arts Alive! on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit, “Artists Choice,” is on display on the first floor of the gallery, 603 F St. in Eureka. Also on view is “Photograph­ic Replica of the U.S. Capital Christmas Tree Skirt 2021” and artwork by Victoria Ziskin, Hans Spek and Doug Freie.

Tour the marsh

Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday. Meet leader Elliott Dabill at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpreti­ve Center on South G Street for a 90-minute, rain-or-shine walk focusing on marsh ecology.

Marsh tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata, where many shorebird, waterbird and terrestria­l species will have settled in for the winter. Bring binoculars for a morning of birding.

Open studios

Local artists Patricia Sennott and Laura Corsiglia are hosting a “Winter Holiday Open Studios” event Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The artists will be showing their drawings, paintings, hand-made prints, cyanotypes, reproducti­ons and greeting cards. The studio is located at 1125 16th St. in Arcata. Masks are required. For more informatio­n, call 707-496-1922.

Birdwatchi­ng walk

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a “Women & Girls Birdwatchi­ng Walk” on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. along the V Street loop in Arcata. The walk leaders are Jaime Carlino and Laura Echávez, both are graduate students in Matt Johnson’s Lab of Habitat Ecology at Humboldt State University studying barn owls.

Carlino’s work examines the effects of habitat preference­s and intrinsic quality on annual reproducti­ve success and Echávez’s work is focusing on plumage variation in barn owls in Napa Valley.

Echávez has an extensive background handling and observing raptors, having interned with Golden Gate Raptor Observator­y and working extensivel­y with raptors since then, and Carlino has experience conducting raptor surveys in the Sierra Nevada and working to eliminate the use of toxic rodenticid­es that work their way up the food chain as director of Humboldt County’s regional chapter of Raptors Are the Solution.

For the birds

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present an online program, “A Holiday Photo Contest and Summary of Winter Bird Counts,” on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Andrew Orahoske and guests will cover all five regional Christmas Bird Counts, and other upcoming winter bird surveys during this program, which will also include an interactiv­e photo contest with prizes — one photo entry per person.

Volunteers needed

The Mateel Community Center is looking for kitchen volunteers for its “Winter Arts Faire” Dec. 11 and 12.

There are three shifts available beforehand on Dec. 10 and on Dec. 11 and 12, volunteers are also needed for three shifts between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Volunteers will be making and serving food.

Volunteers are also needed to help clean up after the fair ends each day. Text or call Akasha at 916801-4442 to sign up for shifts.

Clothing giveaway

The Eureka Center for Spiritual Living invites the community to its clothing and household item “Giveaway Day” on Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 239 Buhne St. in Eureka. Masks and social distancing are required.
