Christmas recycling services available

- By Mario Cortez mcortez@times-standard.com

With Christmas behind us now, it’s time to figure out what to do with the tall, heavily decorated tree in the living room now that all the presents are gone from the tree skirt.

Recycling your Christmas tree is generally a more eco-friendly alternative than simply dumping it, as the firs are rich in biodegradable materials and can be processed into mulch for gardens and other green areas.

Recology will be picking up Christmas trees on Saturday, Jan. 7 and 14 for a $5 fee. Customers subscribed to green waste services can leave their trees next to their cart during regular collection service, with collection at no additional charge.

Before recycling or disposing of your tree make sure to remove all ornaments, trimmings and tinsel from the tree. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

Residents in the Arcata-McKinleyville area looking to support a good cause can support the McKinleyville Girl Scout 70181 Troop in its fundraising efforts.

The troop will be picking up and recycling Christmas trees in exchange for donations for a trip to England, where the scouts will be visiting the World Girl Guide and Girl Scout Center at Pax Lodge, as well as other historical locations.

“Despite the wet and cold work, the Girl Scouts feel it is important for the environment to provide this service. Two previous groups of older girls from Troop 70181 each successfully made three-week long trips to England and Wales in the summer of 2013 and the summer of 2016 thanks to their similar efforts and the support of our Humboldt community,” a troop release states.

Collection for this fundraiser will begin Saturday, Jan. 1, with more pick-up dates on Jan. 2, 8 and 9. The suggested donation for the fundraiser tree removal is $7.

Any residents in the Arcata McKinleyville area interested in helping out may contact Cheryl Kingham via phone at 707-5028929 starting Monday, Dec. 27 to schedule a pick-up appointment. An online form is also available, at https://forms.gle/tBEhvTMCWYCxMkNQ6 .

Consult with your local waste collection service provider or city services for any news or updates on drop-off locations for recycling and other means to dispose of your trees.
