‘A worthy cause’

Blue Lake yard sale benefits community resource center

For a second year, the Blue Lake Community Resource Center for Providence St. Joseph/Redwood Memorial hospitals has received proceeds from the annual Blue Lake Citywide Yard Sale.

This year’s sale took place Aug. 20. And while each individual seller keeps their own money raised, Blue Lake residents can pay $5 to have their location put on a special map of yard sales in town that day.

“That’s how we have some money to donate to a worthy cause,” said Blue Lake Mayor Adelene Jones.

She added: “The event is successful because the citizens of Blue Lake get together to sell their used items for one day rather than trying to have individual sales.”

This year’s donation to the Blue Lake Community Resource Center was $100, after some overhead costs were paid, Jones said.

“I enjoy seeing the town come together for a common purpose. I bought several items myself,” said Jones, who has been chairing the event since 2015.

“For the last two years,” she said, “we chose the Blue Lake Community Resource Center because they do so much for our citizens.”

Kim Rios, senior communities program/service coordinator for the Blue Lake Community Resource Center for Providence St. Joseph/Redwood Memorial, said, “We really appreciate receiving the proceeds from the map of the community wide yard sale. We have been experiencing an increase in people needing food, so the proceeds will help in purchasing extra food for our pantry.”

Rios says the Blue Lake Community Resource Center provides resource and referral services to the Blue Lake community and surrounding area.

“Our services are free of charge, with a few income qualifying programs,” she said. “We provide service to individuals, families and seniors. We are open five days a week, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Mondays being by appointment only.”

The Blue Lake Community Resource Center is located at 111 Greenwood Ave. in Blue Lake. For more information, go to https://bluelake.ca.gov/ city-services/communityresources/.
