A labyrinth talk and Shrove Tuesday pancakes

- By The Rev. Dr. Daniel DeForest London

Due to the earthquake on Dec. 20, the fourth and final presentation on “The History and the Mystery of the Labyrinth” has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church in Eureka. All are invited and donations for food are welcome.”

The evening event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the return of the parish’s Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the 40 days of Lent when Christians fast in preparation for Easter Sunday.

Traditionally, Shrove Tuesday is a day to feast before the fast — and one of the best ways to feast is with pancakes, which use up flour, butter, eggs so that you’re not tempted to cook with these rich ingredients throughout the Lenten season.

The word “shrove” comes from the Middle English word “shrive,” which means to confess one’s sins and receive absolution.

As we feast on pancakes before our Lenten journey, we will be concluding a journey that we began back in Advent: an exploratory journey through the mysteries of the Labyrinth, guided by our presenter, Kathryne DeLorme.

The labyrinth, which can serve as an effective tool for contemplation during Lent, is generally a circular formation with a single path to walk which leads to a center, to pause for reflection before taking the same path back out. Since ancient times, it has been a metaphor for spiritual pilgrimage or for the journey of life.

Walking a labyrinth offers an opportunity for prayer, solace, transformational insight and ceremonies.

In this final presentation, DeLorme will explore the “When, Where, Why, and How” of labyrinth walking using photos of a variety of labyrinths in wide a range of locations. Each attendee will be provided with a printed labyrinth pattern to experience a contemplative “Finger Labyrinth Walk” with music.

DeLorme has facilitated transformative arts workshops and labyrinth walks for counseling and recovery centers, hospice, women’s study groups and meditation circles. She studied counseling and depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute and trained as a labyrinth facilitator with Canon Dr. Lauren Artress, the founder of the Veriditas program offering education about labyrinths.

Christ Church has a labyrinth on the floor of its chapel. For more information, call 707-442-1797.*
