College of Redwoods presents ‘Faculty and Staff Exhibition’

-

College of the Redwoods is presenting the 2023 “Faculty and Staff Exhibition” through Feb. 16.

The work in this year’s survey includes drawings, sculptures, functional ceramics, photographs, which sometimes touch on common themes like pattern and repetition in decoration and the natural world, and transformation of materials, objects and forms. A public reception will take place at the CR Art Gallery on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m.

CR artists Benjamin Funke, Ruth Jensen, L L Kessner, Tova Lund, Mary Mallahan, Natalia Margulis, Christine Reiher, Dean Smith, Shannon Sullivan, David Wilson and Dave Zdrazil will all show work representing their current studio practices.

Among the included pieces this year, Mallahan’s ceramic work “elucidates meaning and purpose through process, and connects to the user through our shared act of touch, utility and exchange.”

Mallahan writes that, “These functional ceramic pieces are examples of my recent focus on presentational vessels: exploring aesthetic value, evoking curiosity and enriching utility.”

In contrast, Zdrazil presents a “fusion of traditional and contemporary pottery styles,” with influences that include “sustainability, horticulture and local materials.”

Wilson’s art uses digital photomontage to explore a “complicated” interest in night.

Wilson writes that, “It has to do with the mysteries of the cosmos, certainly, and I try to capture that. But there is also a fascination with the light that can be found — or introduced — in the darkness beneath the stars.”

The College of the Redwoods Art Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m,. and by appointment. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.redwoods. edu/artgallery or call the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences office at 707-476-4559.
