Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Kathryn Wendel at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails, beautiful views of Humboldt Bay, a possible otter sighting and a diverse range of overwintering birds, including ducks, shorebirds, herons and egrets, raptors and songbirds.

Birding tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m.

Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the Visitor Center for this two-mile walk along a wide, flat, packed gravel trail that is easily accessible.

This refuge offers tidally-influenced habitats, including mudflats, riparian vegetation, conifers and a bay that hosts a variety of geese, raptors, shorebirds and waders. Email Ralph to sign up at thebook@reninet.com.

Look for birds

Redwood Region Audubon Society trip leaders Susan Penn and Susan O’Connor will host the monthly “Women and Girls Birding Trip” Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.

This month, participants will explore the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Loleta area. Everyone will meet at the Hookton Slough Unit to start looking for grebes, ducks, pelicans, shorebirds and maybe meadowlarks, swans and surf scoters. From there, everyone will drive toward Loleta, make a couple of stops to watch for raptors and check ponds for freshwater-loving birds before circling back to end the day at the Hookton Slough Refuge.

To get to the Hookton Slough Unit, take Exit 696 off U.S. Highway 101. Northbound, turn left and go west over the overpass and take a right on Hookton Road. Follow the road about 1.2 miles and you will see the signed turnoff to the parking lot on your right. Southbound, go straight ahead from the off-ramp stop sign. Follow Hookton Road west about 1.2 miles, and take the signed turn-off down to the parking lot. Contact Susan Penn with questions susanpenn60@gmail.com.
