Cellist to play father’s musical composition

The Eureka Symphony will present the boldly pictorial “Karelia Overture, op. 10” by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, followed by a cello concerto written by Michael Kibbe and performed by his son, cellist Peter Kibbe, on March 3 and 4. Both 8 p.m. performances conclude with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 3 in A minor (The Scottish),” capturing the misty mood of Scotland.

Michael Kibbe has created over 212 concert works, including commissions by the city of Los Angeles, the Pacific Serenades concert series and Quatrocelli, with his compositions having been performed throughout the United States, Mexico, Europe, Israel and China. Composing “Cello Concerto, Opus 300” knowing his son would be performing it has been a particularly rewarding experience.

Michael Kibbe said, “I know Peter can play anything, so there was no constraint (there).”

Since the composer has also played in the Eureka Symphony for nine years, he had a good idea of the strengths of the group and adjusted his musical ideas to fit.

Michael Kibbe said, “I consider this one of my finest works, and look forward to what I am sure will be a fine performance.”

Peter Kibbe currently enjoys a career as an orchestral and chamber musician in and around Baltimore, Maryland. He has worked with several of today’s respected performers and conductors, including Michael Tilson Thomas, Kent Nagano, Grant Gershon, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle and John Legend, to name a few. He is a member of several ensembles in Baltimore, including The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, which performs a diverse range of classical and romantic era pieces, and is a founding member of Pique Collective, an acclaimed chamber group dedicated to uncommon music in uncommon venues.

Peter Kibbe also enjoys performing with Mind on Fire, a large modular ensemble dedicated to performing premiers, commissions and hot new music.

Eureka Symphony ticket prices range from $19 to $49. RUSH tickets are available at the door at 7 p.m. for $10 for students with ID and $15 for non-student adults.
