The Trinidad Art Gallery is featuring three of its members this month — Fantasy Lane Copper Fairy artist Sarah Magnuson, screen printer John Wesa and musician/songwriter JD Jeffries.

The three are among the 24 local artists who make up the cooperative gallery at 490 Trinidad St. in Trinidad. Their art reflects the beauty of the surrounding ocean, wildlife and redwoods.

A founding member of the Trinidad Art Gallery, Magnuson has been creating copper mobiles, hand cut figures with the spirit of fairies that nestle in natural elements such as shells, seedpods, trailing air plants, blown glass, crystals beads and feathers. Many are designed to reflect the healing, restorative and medicinal powers of the herbs after which the fairies’ wings are shaped. Each is sold with a storybook describing the fairy lore.

This month, Magnuson has several Valentine’s sculptures on display. A ginkgo fairy couple — connected at the head, the heart and the toes — symbolizes memories built together. Their wings are patterned after the heartshaped leaf of the ginkgo tree.

Wesa’s depictions of Humboldt County’s beautiful, natural areas grace the walls of many businesses and homes. He graduated from Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) in 1976 in cinema and screen printing (serigraphy) and has since memorialized landscapes with the flora and fauna of this region.

“Occasionally, I feel angry about the way the people of the world treat their own family. My art is a way to deal with it,” Wesa said. “I just seek a peace and timelessness that’s nearer the heart of God. I love the whole process of printmaking. It puts out the grass fire that is burning in the backyard of my memory.”

Jeffries can be heard locally in a wide variety of musical formats. His styles include rock, folk, blues, country, bluegrass, Motown and a program of John Denver’s hits. Some of the many well-known musicians he has played with include Boz Skaggs, Jerry Garcia, Elvin Bishop, bluesman Roy Rogers, Al Rossert of the Moody Blues, Youngbloods, Buddy Reed, Stoneground and the legendary Rose Maddox.

Jeffries started his solo career in 2006, and has released several CDs, including “Mixed Classics” and “Through the Years.” Both are often played in the gallery and are available there.
