When will America take action on gun control?

-

It would be nice if our government could actually govern. Democracy works well if the three branches of government cooperate and pass needed legislation. Unfortunately for the country, this hasn’t happened for years. The stated goal of the House this year is to attack Biden whenever possible and obstruct his progressive agenda. The Senate plans to hold onto the filibuster so it can block any legislation the Democrats try to enact. Can a government like this survive for much longer?

What bothers me is how much our Congressmen are so like puppets to wealthy industries. These corporations make millions of dollars every year in profits while denying ordinary citizens needed services like medicine and gun control. When are the people’s needs going to come before industry profits?

And then there is the 2nd Amendment. The way it is written, it is difficult to know exactly what it means. One portion of the Amendment states the rights of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. But what about the phrase before that one? This Amendment has been misinterpreted for years. Obviously, the right to bear arms refers to a well-regulated Militia, not to individuals. People are being killed in mass all over the country now and gun owners and their politicians seem not to care.

The line in Bob Dylan’s song “Blowing in the Wind” seems appropriate. “How long will it take us to realize that too many people have died.” Can we change any of this horror? Do we really want to?
