Student films

The Cal Poly Humboldt Department of Art + Film will hold the “2023 Student Filmmaker Showcase” Friday at 6 p.m. in the John Van Duzer Theatre on the Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Arcata.

The program of short films includes fiction, documentar­y and experiment­al pieces and highlights the collaborat­ion, hard work and creativity of student storytelle­rs and artists.

The program, titled “Into the Deep,” will run approximat­ely 75 minutes. Admission and parking are free.

Fundraisin­g event

Centro del Pueblo will hold a fundraisin­g event Friday at the Eureka Friday Night Market in Old Town Eureka.

With the support of Humboldt Made, Centro del Pueblo is raising funds for its Sanctuary Gardens in Arcata, Eureka, Bayside, Loleta and Fortuna. This event not only marks the second year of the Sanctuary Gardens, but also celebrates a Latin American Independen­ce Day.

There will music by DJ Asis and a Baile Terapia open class at 7 p.m.

TCIL expo

The 14th annual TriCounty Independen­t Living “Independen­t Living Expo” will take place Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Adorni Center, 1011 Waterfront Drive, Eureka.

Admission is free. This all-ages event includes games, prizes, raffles and more.

DAR meets

The Redwood Forest Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a program at 11 a.m.

The program will include a presentati­on about highlights of the Northern Council, summer activities and informatio­n about the 2023-2024 year submitted by the treasurer. There will be a video preview of Fort Humboldt in preparatio­n for the Oct. 14 meeting, which will be held at Fort Humboldt with camp host William Poore providing a tour.

Marsh tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Bill Rodstrom at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails and an opportunit­y to view a diverse range of species. Trip-goers may see brown pelicans diving for fish, shorebird murmuratio­ns over the bay, the bill diversity of Pacific Coast shorebirds and migratory terrestria­l species returning for the winter.

Tour the marsh

Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.

Meet leader Alex Stillman at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpreti­ve Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk focusing on marsh history, wastewater treatment, and/or ecology. This event takes place rain or shine. For more informatio­n, call 707826-2359.

Community event

Festejando Nuestra Comunidad will take place on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the College of the Redwoods Eureka campus.

Birding tour

The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m., with leader Ralph Bucher.

This relatively urban trail offers the potential to observe species abundance and diversity compared to many more remote locations. Keep an eye and ear out for cormorants, loons, grebes, and even otters diving for their meals in the bay alongside the trail. This walk is on a flat, paved trail that is wheelchair accessible. Bell ringing

The Eel River Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a bell ringing ceremony on Sunday in front of the Fortuna Veterans Hall on Main Street.

Everyone will gather at 12:45 p.m., and the bells will ring at 1 p.m. sharp for one minute. All ages are welcome and bells will be provided. The time and date celebrates the 236th anniversar­y of the Declaratio­n of Independen­ce.

Dance party

A dance with live music and a “great floor” takes place every Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Admission is $9.

Parking lot sale

The Nursing Honor Society of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties will have a parking lot sale Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Coldwell Banker parking lot, 985 G St. in Arcata.

This is a fundraiser specifical­ly for nursing scholarshi­ps for those pursuing associate, bachelor and above nursing degrees.
