Guided walks showcase coastal spaces
Friends of the Dunes is offering free guided walks designed for nature-curious individuals interested in building their confidence to explore and enjoy Humboldt County’s natural spaces. No experience is necessary; all walks will be introductory level with friendly and welcoming instructors.
The walks include: “Exploring the Coast,” Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join naturalist Emily Baxter for a beginner-friendly overview of the what, how, when and where to get outside and explore the coast. This workshop includes a short walk in soft sand.
“Sunset Stroll,” Sept. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Join naturalist Suzie Fortner for a leisurely stroll through the dunes at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center. Get in touch with observation skills as everyone searches for signs of animal life and learns plant identification basics. Participants will meander their way to the beach in time to view the sunset and, if weather permits, have the chance enjoy the rising Harvest Moon on the way back. This walk will take place in soft sand with moderate elevation change; please wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
“Forest Mindfulness,” Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join naturalist and Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide Justin Legge at Samoa Dunes & Wetlands Conservation Area for an introduction to forest and nature mindfulness. Participants will discuss and practice specific techniques to enable themselves to receive as much benefit from nature in as short a time as possible.
RSVP is required for every workshop by emailing info@ friendsofthedunes.org or calling 707-444-1397 to reserve a spot. More information about each workshop and directions will be provided upon registration. Space is limited in these workshops.
