EWC celebrates its milk program

-

The nonprofit Eureka Woman’s Club recently participated in the General Federation of Women’s Club National Day of Service.

This event centered on the topic of food insecurity and the Eureka Woman’s Club focused on its milk program, which buys and donates milk to the Eureka Rescue Mission and St. Vincent de Paul dining facility.

At the event, Kristen

Freeman from the Eureka Rescue Mission Women’s Shelter spoke about the nutritional needs of their women and children and the growing need for whole milk among their clients. Mary Price of St. Vincent de Paul spoke of feeding 350 to 400 people per day and the ongoing requirement for milk. Eureka City Council member Renee Contreras De Loach also spoke at the event.

Monica Gray talked about the commitment of the bank to support the community with a $2,400 grant to fund the Eureka Woman’s Club Milk Program. Coast Central Credit Union’s marketing director, Colleen Toste, spoke about the $4,800 given in the spring of 2022 for the EWC Milk Program as part of the credit union’s community giving program.

EWC club member Suzanne Dockal gave an overview of the milk program from its humble beginnings in the late early 2000s by one of the members who wanted to see the children have fresh whole milk with their meals instead of powdered milk.

After hearing from the myriad speakers, the attendees joined in a social, having ice cream donated by Humboldt Creamery. A variety of toppings were offered.
