Hospital to light up pink on Monday

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and as part of a monthlong awareness campaign, Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka will host a special lighting ceremony that will cast the hospital in pink on Monday. Cancer program caregivers and hospital leaders will be on hand to take part in the event and help bring focus to education and preventative screenings for breast cancer and to celebrate and encourage survivors to share their stories.

“The primary goal of Breast Cancer Awareness month is to educate women about breast cancer and early detection screening so that they can take charge of their breast health,” Priscilla Lynn, area director of the St. Joseph Hospital Eureka cancer program, said in a prepared statement.

The American Cancer Society recommends the following guidelines for early detection of breast cancer:

• Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so.

• Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.

• Women 55 and older can either switch to mammograms every two years or can continue yearly screening.

• Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.

• All women should be familiar with the known benefits, limitations, and potential harms linked to breast cancer screening.

The lighting ceremony will take place at 6:15 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital in front of the main entrance to the hospital.

Save the Redwoods League elects chair

Save the Redwoods League announced this week that its board of directors elected Sara Clark to serve as chair. The Board also elected Rosemary Cameron and Abe Tarapani to serve as vice chairs, John Montague as secretary and Mike Wyatt as treasurer. The newly elected officers are vastly experienced in land conservation, tribal law, parks and public engagement, scientific research and philanthropy.

“Each of our new officers brings unique and deep passions for coast redwood and giant sequoia conservation to their leadership roles. We’re honored to work with them and have their strong leadership on our Board of Directors,” said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League, in a prepared statement. “I’m thrilled to announce that Sara Clark has been elected to serve as chair of the Board of Directors for Save the Redwoods League. Her work in land conservation, engagement of Indigenous communities and conservation policy solutions will help accelerate the pace and scale of the League’s conservation work in the context of equity and climate resilience.”

Clark looks forward to the new challenge.

“I’m honored by the trust endowed in me by my fellow Board members, and excited to help shape the future of the League at this pivotal time,” said Clark. “Both the coast redwood and giant sequoia ranges are threatened by climate change and historical land use and management practices”
