Food and fun will be served up at this month's “Soup and Pie, Oh My!” fundraiser.

The popular event is set for Feb. 23 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Fortuna United Methodist Church, 922 N St., Fortuna. The public is welcome to attend.

A wide array of homemade soups and pies, along with rolls, will be available to enjoy. Some of the soups that have been served over the years include potato, turkey noodle, chicken tortilla, vegetable beef, minestrone, split pea and more. Pies also run the gamut, from coconut, apple and blueberry to chocolate, pumpkin, pecan and others.

“On a cold, wet night it is a perfect dinner,” said church member Karen Parlato, who also serves as one of the church pianists. “… It is fun, because you have so many choices, and you don't have to do the dishes.”

The suggested donation for “Soup and Pie, Oh My!” — payable at the door — is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 and older and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Kids under 3 are free. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling Carol at 707-725-2931.

Funds raised from this event will help with Fortuna United Methodist Church earthquake and roof repairs.

“The church building is one of the older buildings in Fortuna,” Parlato said. “It has been damaged by earthquakes in the past, but this time there was quite a bit of damage from the past two earthquakes a year apart. The pipes for the pipe organ came unconnected from the back wall after the first earthquake. It was not safe to walk under or around it. We could not use the sanctuary for weeks. Other areas of the church building also shifted in the first quake.

“The last earthquake,” she said, “caused large areas of old drywall to fall from the walls in the sanctuary and broke several windows (and) affected the floor in certain areas. The building shifting has caused areas of the roof to need repairs, plus it is an older roof.”

“Soup and Pie, Oh My!” initially started in mid-2010s and, except for a few years during the pandemic, has been an annual event.

“Doris DeLong came up with the idea,” Parlato said. “It was to be an event at the church that the community could enjoy and (to) help raise money for special church-related projects.”

She added, “Fortuna is a wonderful community to live in. People have come out to support us whenever there seems to be a need. It is wonderful to live in a friendly community and to (have) the wonderful support.”
