Caray hired as TV broadcaste­r for A's games

Chris Caray has been hired as a play-by-play announcer for A's games on NBC Sports California, becoming the fourth generation of his family to work as an MLB broadcaste­r.

Caray's father, Chip, is the TV play-by-play voice for the St. Louis Cardinals. Chris Caray's grandfathe­r, Skip, called games for the Atlanta Braves for 32 years. Harry Caray, Chris' great-grandfathe­r, was a winner of the Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasti­ng.

“Ever since I was a 12-year-old kid, I dreamed of becoming a major league broadcaste­r,” Chris Caray said Tuesday in a release announcing the hire. “Now, I'm thrilled that that dream has come true.”

The 24-yearold Caray joins Jenny Cavnar and former big league pitcher Dallas Braden in Oakland's TV booth. Cavnar was hired this month, becoming the first woman to handle primary play-by-play duties in major league history.

CFP APPROVES NEW FORMAT >> The field for the 12-team College Football Playoff beginning next season will comprise five conference champions and seven atlarge selections after the university presidents who oversee the CFP voted unanimousl­y to tweak the format.

The move to decrease the number of spots reserved for conference champions from six to five was prompted by realignmen­t and the disassembl­ing of the Pac-12.

The original plan for the 12team format was to have the six highest-ranked conference champions, with the top four receiving first-round byes, and six at-large selections. But with one fewer so-called power conference after the Pac-12's demise, the commission­ers who manage the CFP recommende­d the change from the 6-6 format to 5-7.

The Boston Red Sox announced that they signed free agent right-hander Liam Hendriks to a two-year contract with a mutual option for 2026.

A three-time All-Star — with Oakland in 2019 and the Chicago White Sox in 2021 and `22 — his 2023 season ended after only five appearance­s when he was placed on the injured list

with right elbow inflammati­on on June 12. That eventually led to Tommy John surgery on Aug. 2. He hopes to be back in games near the trade deadline in late July.

RAYS AND INFIELDER ROSARIO AGREE TO 1-YEAR CONTRACT >> The Tampa Bay Rays and veteran infielder Amed Rosario have agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press.

Rosario can make an additional $500,000 in incentives, according to the person who spoke to the AP.

The 28-year-old Rosario can play shortstop, second base and in the outfield. He spent last season with Cleveland and the Los Angeles Dodgers, batting .263 with six homers and 58 RBIs in 142 games.

Soccer FISHEL TEARS HER RIGHT ACL >>

Veteran Alex Morgan will replace Mia Fishel on the U.S. national team's roster for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup after the Chelsea forward tore a ligament in her right knee during practice.

Fishel, who tore her ACL on Monday, was included among the 23 U.S. players for the tournament that started Tuesday. The United States was set to open group play against the Dominican Republic at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson on Tuesday night.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE >> Marko Arnautovic came off the bench to help Inter Milan to a 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Arnautovic replaced the injured Marcus Thuram at halftime and redeemed himself after missing a couple of early chances by scoring the winning goal 11 minutes from time . ... Luuk de Jong converted a penalty to cancel out a goal by his former teammate Donyell Malen as PSV Eindhoven and Borussia Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg of their round of 16 matchup.
