Entry deadlines near for writing, art contests

Deadlines are approachin­g for two longtime student contests.

March 23 is the deadline to enter the Redwood Region Audubon Society's 19th annual “Student Nature Writing Contest.” Up to six cash prizes will be awarded for the best essay(s) or poem(s) on “What Nature Means to Me” by Humboldt or Del Norte County students in grades four through 12. First-place winners will be published in the chapter's newsletter, The Sandpiper. All winners will be published in a booklet posted at www.rras.org by mid-May.

The contest is held in conjunctio­n with the Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival. All winning writing pieces will be displayed during the festival (April 19-21) in the Arcata Community Center lobby. Awards will be presented the morning of April 20.

The deadline for submission­s Is 5 p.m. on March 23. A flyer with complete instructio­ns is posted at www.rras.org and www. godwitdays.org, or can be picked up at the Interpreti­ve Center, 569 South G St., Arcata. E-mail questions to sueleskiw1@gmail.com.

March 23 is also the deadline to enter the 21st annual Student Bird Art Contest, sponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh and the Redwood Region Audubon Society and also being held in conjunctio­n with the Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival.

Up to $650 in prizes may be awarded to Humboldt County students from kindergart­en through high school who submit a drawing of one of 40 suggested species or another kind of bird that has been seen locally.

All entries will be displayed during the festival (April 19-21) in the lobby and hallways of the Arcata Community Center. Awards will be presented the morning of April 20. Color copies of winning artwork will be shown at the Arcata Marsh Interpreti­ve Center during May and June.

A flyer containing complete rules to submit entries, plus a list of suggested birds to draw, is posted at www.godwitdays.org or can be picked up at the Arcata Marsh Interpreti­ve Center, 569 South G St., Arcata. Flyers will be mailed to all Humboldt County schools.

Artwork may be dropped off at the Interpreti­ve Center (open Tuesday-Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, 1 to 5 p.m.) or mailed to Sue Leskiw, 155 Kara Lane, McKinleyvi­lle CA 95519. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. March 23 to be judged; no late entries will be considered. Questions should be e-mailed to sueleskiw1@gmail.com.
