Grant supports Boys & Girls Club of the Yurok Tribe

-

The Klamath Boys & Girls Club of the Yurok Tribe will use a $25,000 strategy grant from Humboldt Area Foundation+Wild Rivers Community Foundation for operational expenses that include cultural field trips, supplies and activities for community's children.

“We really appreciate the support of HAF+WRCF. This grant will go a long way in helping us provide safe, positive experiences for our youth,” said club Manager Harold Jones.

The club's primary goal is to give youth the educational and social skills that they need to develop into empowered adults, he said.

The club serves 25 young people a day in Klamath and 10 young people a day in the Humboldt County location of Ke'pel. In the summer, the program expands its hours and membership capacity, through partnerships and interns, and expands to seven hours a day, five days a week.

Last summer there were 35 members a day for Klamath club and 15 members a day for Ke'pel club, according to Jones. The Klamath club hosts open gym recreation nights at Margaret Keating school that average 30 community members a session.

The Klamath facility, located at 168 Klamath Blvd., is filled with workout stations, a pool table and other table games, as well as several computer stations and a video gaming area. There are also weekly classes, tutoring services, and other specialized scholastic opportunities.

HAF+WRCF's strategy grant program, funded by its donors, is designed to assist groups and projects in Humboldt, Del Norte, Curry and Trinity counties, furthering a healthy, just and equitable region where community members and families can thrive.
