- By Heather Shelton hshelton@times-standard.com

Lama Lodu Rinpoche will be in Eureka on March 23 and 24 to give teachings on the Six Bardos. His visit is being hosted by the KDK Arcata Buddhist GroupDorje Yang Dron.

“Bardo” is a Tibetan word meaning “in between” and “is a teaching that Buddhists should understand well. … This teaching will help you to easily recognize the Bardo state when it occurs,” explains a local flyer for the teachings.

Dylan Fierro of the KDK Arcata Buddhist Group (aka, Lama Nyugu) said, “I think (this is) a good opportunity to connect with an authentic Buddhist teacher, Lama Lodu Rinpoche, who in my experience has a unique ability to clearly explain a profound topic like the Bardos so it's easy to understand. As Rinpoche and many wise lamas have said, `By putting Buddhist teachings such as the Six Bardos into practice, we can benefit in this life, at the time of death and in future lives.'”

All events below will take place at the Eureka Veterans Hall, 1018 H St., Room A in Eureka. All are welcome.

Rinpoche's first teaching is titled “Bardo of Life and Death.” It's slated for 10 a.m. to noon March 23. This will be followed by “Bardo of Dream and of Meditation” from 2 to 4 p.m. Each session is a $20 donation, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds. (Donations can be paid in cash at the door or via Venmo to @RDFierro. Tuition donations will go toward a group offering by KDK Arcata Buddhist Group to the teacher, as well as other related expenses to offer these teachings.)

On March 24, Rinpoche begins the day with a teaching titled “Bardo of the Death and Dying Process” from 10 a.m. to noon. From 2 to 4 p.m., he will delve into the “Bardo of Dharmata and Bardo of the Search for Rebirth.” These sessions are also $20 each.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 24, Rinpoche will join the KDK Arcata Buddhist Group as it meets to practice the Chenrezig meditation at Eureka Veterans Hall.

Any of these events can also be attending via Zoom. Zoom attendees are asked to register no later than today (March 16) by contacting Lama Nyugu via email at Fierro_roman@yahoo.com or by phone at 707-6015466 to get the Zoom link.

According to the flyer for the teachings, “Lama Lodu Rinpoche was appointed resident Lama of Kagyu Droden Kunchab in San Francisco … in 1976. Since then, Rinpoche has worked tirelessly to benefit sentient beings throughout the world.”
