Tour the marsh
Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, March 30.
Everyone will meet leader Barbara Reisman at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk that will take place rain or shine.
Topics will include an overview of the wastewater treatment process, followed by a special emphasis on native and non-native plants.
For more information about the walk, call 707-826-2359. For more information about Friends of the Arcata Marsh, go to https://www.arcatamarshfriends.org/.
Marsh field trip
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, March 30, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Kathryn Wendel at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-towalk trails.
With spring here, many resident birds may be singing, nesting and showing signs of breeding activity. Shorebirds will likely be abundant, so everyone will focus their attention on willets, godwits, sanderlings, avocets and curlews in tidal areas, pond islands and mud around the marsh.
Birding trip
The Redwood Region Audubon Society and trip leader Ken Burton will present a field trip to the Loleta Bottoms on March 31 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This portion of the Eel River floodplain is very productive for birds, including raptors, shorebirds and grassland passerines. The amount of rainfall before the trip will determine how far out participants can get.
Those attending should meet Burton in front of the Loleta Grocery and everyone will caravan carpool from there. For more information about the trip, email the trip leader at shrikethree@gmail.com. For more information about Redwood Region Audubon Society, visit http:// www.rras.org/home.aspx.
Pancakes served
The Trinidad Lions Club will hold a pancake breakfast and book sale March 31 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Trinidad Elementary School, 300 Trinity St., Trinidad.
The menu will include pancakes, eggs and a choice of ham or sausage — or biscuits and gravy with eggs. Beverages are included as well. The cost for breakfast is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Books on sale will range in price from 25 cents to $1.
Outside gear sale
Friends of the Dunes will present its annual “Get Outside Gear Sale” on April 6.
Find great deals on gently used outdoor gear while supporting a great cause — free outdoor education programs for Humboldt County kids and stewardship of the local native dune ecosystems.
What is outdoor gear? Camping and backpacking equipment, kayaks and canoes, surfboards, bikes, hiking boots and so much more.
The sale will be open to Friends of the Dunes members from 11 a.m. to noon, and to everyone from noon to 3 p.m. At 2 p.m., prices will be slashed on any remaining gear.
The sale supports Friends of the Dunes' education and stewardship programs, provides the community with excellent deals on outdoor gear and encourages buying used, which benefits the environment.
This sale takes place at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, 220 Stamps Lane in Manila. For more information, send an email to info@friendsofthedunes.org or call 707-444-1397.
