Marsh tour

Friends of the Arcata Marsh will hold a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.

Everyone will meet leader Elliott Dabill at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk, which will be held rain or shine.

Attendees will see some of the changes resulting from Arcata's $60 million upgrade to its marsh-based wastewater treatment process and will learn how this first-in-the-world use of marshes operates to solve a common problem. For more information, call 707-826-2359.

As spring starts to arrive, many resident birds may be singing, nesting and showing signs of breeding activity. Shorebirds will likely be abundant, so the focus will be on willets, godwits, sanderlings, avocets and curlews in tidal areas, the pond islands and mud around the marsh.
