The legacy of No Labels, Joe Lieberman

- By Lawrence Gray Lawrence Gray is a McKinleyville resident.

I have nearly been a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. Thankfully, the two major parties once came together with give and take resulting in a functioning Congress for many years. Unfortunately, the two parties have been bitterly divided in recent years to the detriment of our country. I wish to honor a politician who had worked tirelessly to mend the division as much as possible, Joe Lieberman. I was saddened to hear of his passing March 27.

I received a letter from Joe Lieberman the same day he died. He led the way in creating No Labels 15 years ago mostly for those of us whose views and preferred policies place us to the right of the liberal progressive wing of the democratic party, or to the left of the Republican right on certain policies and views. In the 15 years of the nonprofit No Labels existence, “We have achieved meaningful bipartisan progress, including by supporting problem solvers in elections and elevating them once in office”- Joe Lieberman.

Both parties are afraid of No Labels taking the first step in providing a third-party alternative for President. Particularly, the Democratic Party has been strongly opposed to No Labels putting forth alternative candidates for President and Vice President. However, there really are a lot of people wishing we had a strong moderate alternative to Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

To those who are fearful of new moderate candidates chosen by No Labels delegates for this upcoming Presidential election, please understand the likely proposed moderate republican Presidential candidate has to have a clear record of bi-partisan problem solving, and the same with the democratic VP candidate. I believe there are a lot of moderate Republicans and independents wanting an alternative to Trump but planned to vote for Trump because Joe Biden is unacceptable to them. I refuse to let fear of another 4 years of Donald Trump make me not trust a bold, new direction with the No Labels candidates.
