`Creative Leap'

The Sanctuary, a nonprofit community art and maker center located at 1301 J St., Arcata, is holding a “Creative Leap” workshop starting Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and running every Monday through May 27. The cost is $20 to $25 and drop-ins are welcome.

Growing roses

On Thursday at 7 p.m., at the regular meeting of the Humboldt Rose Society rosarians (rose experts) will be doing a presentati­on on fertilizer­s and mineral deficienci­es.

The meeting is open to the public and all are invited. The Rose Society has a new meeting location, Redwood Acres, 3750 Harris St., Eureka. The meeting room is in the very front of the Raceway Grandstand building. There is ample parking. There will be door prizes and refreshmen­ts available.

Save the date: the Humboldt Rose Society's annual rose and plant sale is set for May 11 at Redwood Acres.

Family Arts Day

The Humboldt Arts Council is hosting “Second Saturday Family Arts Day on Saturday, April 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Morris Graves Museum of Art, 636 F St., Eureka.

This monthly event is always free. Families are invited to participat­e together in this art-making workshop that complement­s current exhibition­s at the museum. These workshops are geared toward intergener­ational learning and creating in a museum setting.

Second Saturday Family Arts Day offers diverse opportunit­ies for the whole family to view, understand and interact with the exhibition­s and art on view.

On Saturday, everyone will be creating their own sculptural figures using a variety of natural and machine-made materials. Participan­ts are encouraged to explore mixed-media artist Ann Savageau's exhibition, “Guardians: Spirits of Protection,” to gather inspiratio­n before gathering in the rotunda for the day's project with assistance and guidance from art educator Genevieve Kjesbu. All are welcome and all materials will be supplied.

Retirees meet

The next breakfast for the Caltrans retirees, spouses and Quarter Century

Club members will be at 9:30 a.m. April 18 at the Village Pantry, 1912 Broadway in Eureka.

Dinner concert

Dream Quest's annual dinner concert fundraiser will be held April 20 at the Willow Creek VFW Hall.

Dinner takes place from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by music by College of the Redwoods' Jazz Band under the direction of Brian Newkirk from 6 to 8 p.m. Swing dance lessons will be offered from 5 to 6 p.m.

This is a multi-generation­al event. All proceeds support Dream Quest youth programs. Raffle tickets will also be sold for a patio set donated by Willow Creek Ace Hardware or other items donated by local businesses.

Tickets for this event are $25 for adults and $15 for youth 12 and under.

Grange cleanup

Humboldt Grange No. 501 will hold a “Community Clean-up Day” April 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the grange hall, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka. Drop in for part of the time, or stay and help throughout the day.

The grange hall was originally built in the mid 1930s. As such, there is regular maintenanc­e on the property, both inside and out. Grange members are in the early stages of embarking on some larger maintenanc­e projects on the property, but in the meantime, the focus is on the building and property grounds. There are cleaning and organizing projects on the inside and grounds work on the outside, and work in the garden. Bring a sack lunch. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
