WELCOME TO T&C’s FEBRUARY ISSUE, 2022
New Year’s resolution: Make it iconic. Where to begin? Start by looking to your right. Even before she was tapped by Louis Cartier to design for the maison (rising to creative director by 1933), Jeanne Toussaint was famous for her love of panthers—so much so that she was known as “La Panthère.” Soon afterward the big cats started prowling the house vitrines. The Cartier Panthère can first be spotted in a wristwatch from 1914, when its signature pattern appeared in diamond and onyx. And like all legends, the Panthère never ceases to evolve, pouncing up as a cocktail ring, or as a brooch, and here as the centerpiece of a cascade of emeralds.
Like all icons, the Panthère is unmistakable. You can see it by keeping your eyes wide open to craftsmanship that still places each stone spot by hand, and to the history ingrained in each setting—reminding us of the singular mind and vision that created it, and of all the one-of-a-kind men and women who have worn the Panthère proudly. And to the wonderfully animated eyes, which dare you to dream about owning one of your very own. Let’s hold that thought, shall we, and bring it with us into 2022. To icons, to evolution, to beauty, to joy.
