Getaways

Relax at a tranquil getaway in the Bahamas.

you might be able to take the boy out of the Bahamas, but you can’t stop the man from wanting to go back—and make it home for his family.

Case in point: Ben Simmons’ love of this place is evident in every corner of The Other Side—a diminutive-in-scale but colossal-inspirit retreat on the island of Eleuthera that he developed and designed with his wife, Charlie Phelan.

Having spent his childhood chasing adventure on the beaches of Harbour Island (where he now also owns the hotel in which he grew up, The Ocean View Club), Simmons returned to his beloved Bahamas after boarding school and a stint as a chef in France.

“I grew up on Harbour Island in a shack on the beach with an outdoor shower,” Simmons says. “It leaked, and it was imperfect, but there was a quaintness and a satisfaction in that imperfection.”

WE BUILT THIS FOR OUR KIDS. IT’S A PLACE OF LOVE.”

—Ben Simmons

Simmons and Phelan welcome that Bahamian patina at The Other Side. Utterly secluded and impeccably designed, it casts a luxurious shadow yet embraces its deconstructed nature.

Made up of just 10 structures—four communal spaces, three sleeping tents, and three thatched-roof “shacks”—the retreat is a “marriage of a nomadic existence and simple materials with a modern feel,” Simmons says.

Much of the furniture is handmade using local materials that are left untreated to warp and weather in the sea air during the offseason. Crisp white bedding intensifies the castaway allure of patinated four-posters. Recycled materials (a dance floor was given a second life as hotel shutters) offer practicality and Bahamian charm.

The dining scene is equally low-key. With a communal, farm- (and sea-) to-table focus, meals are semi-set, but alternatives are always available. And, of course, alfresco is always an option. In this tropical nirvana, tranquility and ease take precedence.

“We tried to refine and simplify the idea of luxury,” Simmons says. “We distilled what is important to relaxation in a setting like this.”

Details The Other Side is located on the island of Eleuthera and is open November through August. For more information or to book your stay, visit ontheos.com. Stay Accommodations include three thatched “shacks” and three sleeping tents complete with four-posters and outdoor (naturally, you’re in island mode here) bathtubs. Hosts Owners Charlie Phelan and Ben Simmons with Busta Rhymes.

The Other Side oozes serenity—due to the white-on-white-onwood interiors with views of paradise and a low-key, open-arms island mind-set.
