Pullman set for Railroad Days
Photography exhibit, railcar tours among events May 14-15
JACK DELANO’S EVOCATIVE
World War II railroad photography; railcar tours; factory tours; and other events will be part of Pullman Railroad Days, May 14-15, at the Pullman National Monument and adjacent state historic site in Chicago.
The Historic Pullman Foundation, the monument’s nonprofit partner, will host Railroad Days, and will display Delano’s “Railroaders” photography exhibit at the foundation’s Exhibit Hall through October.
Organized by the Center for Railroad Photography & Art and the Chicago History Museum, “Railroaders” debuted in Chicago in 2014. Delano roamed Chicago’s roundhouses, terminals, repair shops, steam locomotive cabs and cabooses to photograph diverse workers during 194243, saluting their homefront contributions.
Four Pullman-built cars are confirmed for railcar tours at the nearby 111th Street Metra Electric station: observation cars Pennsylvania Railroad Francis L. Suter
(1914), New York Central No. 3 (1928), Louisville & Nashville Royal Street (1950) and the “last Pullman car,” Amtrak Superliner sleeper George M. Pullman (1981).
The first two cars exemplify the heavyweight era while Royal Street is a classic post-World War II streamliner. Amtrak’s Superliners were the last passenger cars to carry a Pullman-Standard nameplate.
Also planned are tours of the factory grounds. Visit the foundation website at www.pullmanil.org for more information. The Pullman Exhibit Hall is located at 11141 S. Cottage Grove Avenue; phone 312-785-8901. The Pullman National Monument Visitor Center, which opened last year in the former Pullman Co. Administration (Clock Tower) Building, is open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
