Editor’s Letter
Now that we have survived one of the hotter summers in recent memory, the cooler temperatures of an oncoming autumn is a welcome respite from the arid heat and sticky humidity of the places that we’ve explored. As we move into fall, it’s a good time to reevaluate our travel plans, search for new activities to do and refresh our vehicles for the season to come. What will your plans be? I’m looking to hit some higher elevation trails that I haven’t explored yet.
This issue features a wide variety of content from incredible vehicle builds, fantastic locales and exciting outdoor gear. We take a ride in a monstrous 6x6 Man truck that was built for long term overland travels. You won’t want to miss it. Not to be out done, the visionary of Primal Outdoors in conjunction with Ron Tonkin KIA and Wanderlust Overland have developed a Telluride that will take you and your family to your own overland adventures. We also get to see one of the most decked out Series 200 Land Cruisers in North America, if not the world. You’ll want to hear about the backstory of how it came to be.
If it is travel that you’re into, we have a trio of trips you’ll want to get in on. Women Overlanding the World takes us to the trails of Costa Rica in search of vistas that only the tropical location can provide. Our resident explorer, Bryon Dorr, takes a “fly and buy” style trip through South
America. If you ever wanted to do something like that, you’ll want to read what his experiences were. Adventurist Sue Mead hits the long “road” traveling from East to West Australia to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its crossing in “In the Land Down Under… 50 Years On.”
The holidays are quickly approaching, are you ready? We dive into gifts for the outdoor enthusiasts in your life with a holiday gift guide to cover cost conscious gifts that range from $15 to $100. Dropping temperatures makes a warm campfire an essential piece of our outdoor setup. Portable fire pits make it easy to set up a fire at the campground or in your backyard. We look at a selection of the best ones on the market, and we pick a few favorites of our own. With so much gear in our rides, we thought it was a good time to get organized with storage and containers in this issue’s other buyer’s guide.
