EDITOR’S LETTER

- Until next time, Kelly Nomura Editor

Change is good. Challenge makes us stronger.

Never in a million years would one think going out to the middle of nowhere with people you barely know, just met, or simply chatted with online, would be a great idea. In fact, one that even created excitement. Well, the notion may seem outlandish to most, but to the like-minded, that’s normal. Once exposed, I realized I nally found a place where I belong.

The silliness of the concept didn’t strike me as odd until someone said, “Kelly was madefor this. She just got done spending the weekend camping with strangers.” And you know what? That person was right. I wouldn’t have it any other way. When something just feels right, you know. And where that adventure lead me was here, writing my rst editorial for Tread magazine.

Always having an adventurous spirit, open to trying anything once and most things twice, the notion to travel to Flagstaff, Arizona, on my own for Overland Expo West was exciting. I nally got to replace the words and photos I’ve been reviewing for years with tangible things. And it was that trip that changed it all. I met a great group of welcoming people who I now consider lifelong friends, I immersed myself into the overland culture, and I was eventually able to... go camping with strangers. Forever changed I was.

The outdoors was something I’ve always been drawn to, but never truly experienced as a kid. My family took ski trips, but that had me outside for only hours before we rushed in for some heat and hot cocoa. Even in those moments, I knew I loved the mountains and the outdoors. That love has stuck with me over the years. Like many who live in a major metropolis looking for an escape from the madness, I am no different. Finding an outlet that makes you feel at home when you are so far away is quite the special thing.

So here we are today, I’ve taken on the task of driving this rig called Tread to places known and unknown. My sense of adventure will shine through as we bring you some new exciting content ideas, but my instincts and wit will keep us steady en route. We’ll still provide the latest on automotive and outdoors gear, adventure stories to inspire your travels and off-roading pieces that make you want to hit the trail. But you’ll also start to see community-oriented content to showcase the great people that make up this pack we are all a part of. The destination for this journey is to always bring you the tales and stories you, the readers, want to hear. Your feedback helps guide this expedition. Don’t hesitate to reach out and tell us what you want to see more of, what you enjoy, and what pages you tend to skip over. I’ve got a knowledgeable team chomping at the bit to deliver stories you can’t put down.

Dream it up. Jump on in. Turn on some tunes. Let’s go adventure! You won’t be disappointed.
