It’s not fair to say Microsoft’s technology is in the toilet, but it’s true that company co-founder Bill Gates is trying to draw more attention to new toilets and other technology that could more safely dispose of human waste. And he didn’t mind sitting next to a beaker of human feces during a speech at the start of a “Reinvented Toilet” Expo in China. More than 20 companies and institutions displayed technologies at the event, from self-contained toilets to a small-scale, self-powered waste treatment plant. UNICEF estimates that 4.5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe sanitation, and that 480,000 children under the age of 5 die every year from diarrhea, primarily in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
