TOYING WITH NEW IDEAS
Mattel stock surged after the maker of Barbie and Uno announced two deals that could lift sales and win more attention for its games and toys. In one, the company secured rights to make dolls, collectible figures and games featuring the South Korean boy band BTS. BTS, which stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan or “Beyond the Scene,” became the first K-Pop group to reach the No. 1 position on the Billboard Top 200 last year. In the second deal, Mattel and Warner Bros. will produce a live-action Barbie film starring Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie of “Suicide Squad.” It’s the first live-action film based on the doll, which hit shelves in 1959.
