ON THIS DAY
1963 | The YMCA had its first night of a fitness program titled, Focus on Fitness, a class that had a Tri-City Herald reporter feeling like a herd of buffaloes had run over him. The class was designed for middle-aged (25-40) men. Instructor Howard Chitty showed a group of middle-aged men how to get rid of that paunch and firm muscles. They tried basketball, sit-ups, squat thrusts and chin-ups and introduced the class to a nefarious device that resembles a vertical peg board, stretching
20 feet from the floor of the gym.
