Of­fi­cer in­jured in shoot­ing in which ac­cused shoplifter dies

DEL CITY — Au­thor­i­ties in sub­ur­ban Ok­la­homa City say a sus­pected shoplifter has died fol­low­ing a shoot­ing in which an of­fi­cer and a se­cu­rity guard were in­jured.

The shoot­ing oc­curred about 11 p.m. Satur­day at a re­tail store in Del City, about 4 miles south­east of Ok­la­homa City.

Del City po­lice Capt. Bradley Rule says a shoplift­ing sus­pect had been taken to the man­ager's of­fice, where he al­legedly pro­duced a gun and shot a Del City po­lice of­fi­cer and a se­cu­rity guard. The po­lice of­fi­cer re­turned fire, strik­ing the sus­pect.

Of­fi­cials say the al­leged shoplifter was pro­nounced dead at the scene. He hasn't been iden­ti­fied.

The of­fi­cer and se­cu­rity guard were taken to an area hospi­tal and are ex­pected to re­cover. The of­fi­cer was placed on ad­min­is­tra­tive leave pend­ing an in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
