Witching Hour

-

They won’t be cursed by critics. Though Charmed’s original cast members spoke out against the CW remake, the new witches — Melonie Diaz, 34, Sarah Jeffery, 22, and Madeleine Mantock, 28 — aren’t listening. “Everyone is allowed their own opinion,” says Mantock. “It’s a misconception to say it’s a rip-off. There are a lot of people who are really excited for it. So I have my ears open to them.” The trio enchant Us with more.

Q: Have you seen the original?

SJ I was very aware of Charmed as an entity and how beloved it was, so I did go back and watch.

MM I watched before we started. I was quite surprised to see the Easter eggs that were in our pilot! I thought it was cool that we were paying homage to what they did.

Q: How do you relate to your characters?

MM Macy talks really fast, and I can be like that. It was nice to not always have to be a damsel in distress or be super cool.

MD Mel is a lot like me. She’s very invested in politics. It’s so great that we see a character invested in changing the world.

MM And who embraces being a witch instead of being scared!

Q: How do you deal with the naysayers?

MM I don’t take it personally, honestly. I think it’s a really good show.

MD It also feels like there’s already a built-in fandom. I’m not mad at that. Hopefully, they’ll come to our side.
