Busy Keeps It Real

-

When the Woolsey fire raged through California in early November, Busy Philipps struggled to find the right words to explain it to her daughters. “It’s difficult,” the mom to Birdie, 10, and Cricket, 5, says, noting that she wanted to keep it age-appropriate. The Busy Tonight host ultimately decided to make it a teaching moment. “We talked about climate change and what that means,” she says, “and how we can make better steps in our family to do our part.” The actress, 39, who’s married to screenwriter Marc Silverstein, 47, tells Us more about motherhood.

Q: What have been your biggest parenting problems? I’m working a lot on my show, and it’s interesting because my little one is not used to me working this much. But she’s adjusting. She’ll figure it out.

Q: Ever have mom guilt?

Sometimes I fall into the trap where you say the thing that you’re not supposed to say as a mom. Like, “You like that school you go to? You like that private gym class? Well that’s why I work.”

Q: How do you do it all?

Saying no is something I always thought was a weakness, when in actuality it’s the strongest thing you can do. You have to learn that it’s OK to say no.
