Newlyweds Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have called it quits after eight months. Find out why.

Miley Cyrus and Liam

Hemsworth’s love story was always unconventional. They met on the 2009 set of Nicholas Sparks’ film, The Last Song, and dated on an off for a decade before tying the knot at their Nashville home in December 2018. The wedding seemed to mark a change in wild child Cyrus, but now, in light of their split just eight months later, it’s clear it was just another example of the free spirit living in the moment. And now the moment has passed.

By all accounts, the trauma of losing their Malibu home to November’s Woolsey wildfires — from which Hemsworth saved the couple’s numerous animals — is what finally swayed Cyrus down the aisle. “I’m not sure, without losing Malibu, we would’ve been ready to take this step or ever even gotten married,” the singer, 26, revealed then. “But the timing felt right and I go with my heart… I try to be ‘in the now’ as much as possible.” Which turns out to be bad news for her husband. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” her rep confirmed to Us

in a statement, following the news of their split on Aug. 10. (A source confirms they’ve been apart for months.) “Ever evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best…”

ONTO THE NEXT And though “Miley wanted to make her relationship with Liam work more than anything,” the source tells Us, she seems to be doing just fine postbreakup.

Hours before the news broke, she was spotted in Italy getting close to

Kaitlynn Carter (below) — who announced her own split from husband

Brody Jenner a week prior. “Miley and Kaitlynn connected over their breakups and leaned on each other,” an insider tells Us. Adds the first source, “Miley is really focused on work and being in a healthy place.”

Hemsworth seems to be having more trouble. Another source tells

Us that Miley was the one who called it quits, and that as recently as July, Liam was optimistic about the union. On Aug. 12, he seemed less so, telling The Daily Mail Australia,

“You don’t understand what it’s like. I don’t want to talk about it, mate.” Perhaps he should have seen it coming. In an Elle interview earlier this year, Miley asked rhetorically, “Do people really think that I’m at home in a f**king apron cooking dinner? I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role,” she said. “I don’t even like that word.”
