Welcome to the Carnival

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne move into Carnival Row

-

Set in a Victorian fantasy world called the Burgue, Amazon’s Carnival Row follows mythological immigrant creatures who are forced to coexist with humans when their land is taken over. Refugee fairy Vignette (Cara Delevingne) rekindles a romance with human detective Philo (Orlando Bloom) while they also try to solve a murder. The stars shed light on the dark, beautiful thriller (Aug. 30).

Q: What drew you to the fantasy world? CD: I’ve always been interested. I think there’s always been a lot more space to be these extremely amazing female characters. It’s really very important to me, with the jobs I do, to have some sort of positive impact. It’s not like we’re saving lives, but I want to make a

difference.

OB: Fantasy is a way to embrace the creative journey.

Q: What was it like to wear the wings? CD: They were extremely lightweight — they felt real! They’re kind of made out of what they make [prop] dead bodies out of, because I wanted them to be as real as possible to feel and move in. I wanted to practice.

Q: What can you say about your characters’ past relationship? OB: Philo was institutionalized as an orphan — that’s where they met. It’s an experience that a Burgueish man wants to have with fae [a young fairy] — you know, this idea of making love and being elevated into the sky. It’s pretty dramatic.
