Avril Lavigne spills all the details about her seventh album, Love Sux

-

Throughout the years,

Avril Lavigne has proven she can hold her own in any genre — but the “Complicated” singer returns to her signature sound in

Love Sux. Here, she tells Us more.

Q: What inspired this album?

I started this record coming out of a breakup and it’s easy for me to tap into that stuff. I’m writing from all my experiences, and it felt fun to really go there. The album has a positive [message]: self-love, self-respect, stand up for yourself.

Q: How was the writing process?

It was cool because I didn’t have a label or managers. I got together with my friends, started writing and then this album just happened. I was like, “OK, now what?” Travis [Barker] ended up signing me to his label, so I went in without deadlines, pressure or people telling me what direction to go in. I was like, “F**k this; I’m making the album I’ve always wanted to make — a poppunk album from front to back.”

Q: What would you tell your 17-yearold self?

I would say, “F**k, take it all in. It’s gonna be a wild ride. Be as present as possible — and have as much fun as you can.” That’s sort of my motto today.

?? ?? “I’ve learned to laugh at all the ridiculous things love does to us,” Lavigne tells Us, noting Love Sux
(out now) is “very tongue in cheek.”
